I have a Microsoft Lumia 640 XL that I use for work and I have been waiting for the Windows 10 update to become available for a long time because it just looks awesome. Yeah, that’s it, I’m a simple man.
From the official Microsoft Windows 10 page, the Lumia 640 XL is one of the devices that are eligible for the upgrade. However, every time I hit the “check for updates” button in the settings, I would be told that no update was available. I knew that the release of Windows 10 for phones had been postponed several times already, but knowing that the recently-released Lumia 650 and 650 XL come with Windows 10 already installed, it just sounded strange to me that the 640 XL still could not download it.
I stopped thinking about it for a while until yesterday, when I stumbled upon the Upgrade Advisor on the Windows Phone Store.
The app description says the following:
The Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade Advisor app helps you find out if your Windows Phone 8.1 phone is eligible to install the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile.
Well, I already know that my phone is eligible! The app can do something more than this though: it can help you free up space so you can proceed with the upgrade. I still couldn’t figure out if this could help me with the upgrade but I decided to give it a go.
So I pressed the Next button and, surprise surprise, I was told that my phone is indeed eligible to upgrade. Well, duh!
The really surprising thing, however, is that now my phone is apparently ready to upgrade. But checking for available downloads 5 seconds before downloading the Upgrade Advisor resulted in no downloads found. What are the odds of Microsoft releasing the upgrade for the Lumia 640 XL in those 5 seconds? :/
If you are having issue upgrading your eligible Windows Phone to Windows 10 because you are not seeing any available download, try downloading the Upgrade Advisor app from the store and use that to check for available downloads. For me this worked, and I am now happily downloading Windows 10 on my Lumia 640 XL.
